The variable resistor remains a two-terminal device, so the arrow is just laid diagonally across the middle. A potentiometer is a three-terminal device, so the arrow becomes the third terminal (the wiper).

A collection of electronic components that have been assembled and interconnected to perform a given function is commonly referred to as a circuit. The word circuit derives from the fact that electric power must flow from the positive terminal of a power source through one or more electronic devices and back to the negative terminal of a power source, thereby forming a circuit. If the connections between an electronic device and either the positive or negative terminals of a power supply are interrupted, the circuit will be broken and the device will not function.

For dynamic signals, the transfer function cannot in general be described simply. However, if the input is a sinusoidal signal then the output must also be a sinusoidal signal with the same frequency but possibly a different amplitude and phase. In other words, a linear system can only modify the amplitude and phase of a sinusoidal input.

It is important to remember that voltage is not an absolute quantity, rather, it is always considered as a relative value between two points. In an electronic circuit, the electromagnetic problem of voltages at arbitrary points in space is typically simplified to voltages between nodes of circuit components such as resistors, capacitors, and transistors

While electrical is the basis of everything, electronic is a subset of electrical. An electrical circuit deals with just the flow of electrons and has components like resistors, inductors and capacitors and uses Alternating Current Source; while electronic circuit deals with the transformation of current and controlling the motion of the electrons and uses Direct Current Source. An electrical circuit is termed as Passive because it doesn’t have any such component that reacts to the current/voltage that passes through them and electronic circuit is called active because of the additional components like diode or a transformer that react to the current/voltage that passes through.

A simple low-pass filter circuit, which allows low frequency signals to pass through the circuit while attenuating high-frequency signals, can be made using a resistor and capacitor in series. The transfer function of this filter can be determined by analyzing the circuit as a voltage divider,

In this sort of a connection all the components would receive the same voltage, while the current would be divided amongst the components.

By Bertille Solange. Diode. Published at Friday, December 15th 2017, 19:21:36 PM. A simplified planar silicon diode is illustrated in Fig. 2.0.3. Using this process for silicon diodes produces two differently doped layers of silicon, which form a ‘PN junction’. Undoped or ‘intrinsic’ silicon has a lattice structure of atoms, each having four valence electrons, but P type silicon and N type silicon are doped by adding a relatively very small amount of material having either an atomic structure with three valence electrons (e.g. Boron or Aluminium) to make P type, or five valence electrons (e.g. Arsenic or Phosphorus) to make N type silicon. These doped versions of silicon are known as ‘extrinsic’ silicon. The P type silicon now has a shortage of valence electrons in its structure, which can also be considered to be a surplus of ‘holes’ or positive charge carriers, whereas the N type layer is doped with atoms having five electrons in its valence shell and therefore has a surplus of electrons which are negative charge carriers.
